History

The Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier dates back to 18th century Ireland, where they were known as the poor man’s dog or “poor man’s wolfhound.” They were used as versatile farm dogs, helping rid the property of vermin and even hunting game like rabbits and badgers.

The Irish Kennel Club didn’t recognize them as an official breed until 1937, though; before then, these dogs had to qualify in field trials with rats, rabbits, and badgers as prey to win a championship! 

The first Soft-Coated Wheatens arrived in America in 1946. Still, it wasn’t until 1962 that the breed achieved full recognition from the American Kennel Club (AKC). So, on St Patrick’s Day of that year, the Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of America was founded in Brooklyn.

Finally, ten years later, in 1973, Holmenocks Gramachree became the first Wheaten to be registered by AKC. 

Appearance

The Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier is a medium-sized dog known for its thick and silky coat. As far as physical characteristics, it has a rectangular-shaped face, small to medium-sized ears that are level with the head and drop forward, and reddish or brown almond-shaped eyes.
